Jim Spencer was a teacher, and then Sail Training Skipper for the Charity Shaftesbury Homes and Arethusa, skippering the 72ft ketch Arethusa, and then the Sailing Barge Sir Alan Herbert, now back to her original name, Lady Jean.
He then took over Cyril White’s Boatyard in Brightlingsea for 17 years.
He became involved in The Race in 1984, and was on the Race Committee, and eventually Race Chairman, until his untimely death in 2003.
This trophy is presented by Jim’s wife, Caroline, who herself has contributed many years of race reports for the CSPS and is awarded to the 2nd small smack (under 36ft).
